Lleida-Alguaire Airport Consolidates the Diversification of Aeronautical Activities
The Secretary of Infrastructure and Mobility of the Government of Catalonia, Isidre Gavín, highlighted yesterday the evolution of Lleida-Alguaire Airport, “which has gone from being an expectation to a reality,” and has become “a reference platform in southern Europe for the aeronautical industry.” Gavín analyzed the airport’s role as an industrial engine during a session held at PIMEC Lleida, titled “An Opportunity for Industrial Activity: Lleida-Alguaire Airport.”
Figures such as the 58,000 passengers and 30,000 operations recorded last year at the airport, along with the establishment of training and aircraft maintenance activities, support the facility’s progress. The 30,000 operations last year placed the airport “in 19th position out of a total of 49 Aena infrastructures, ahead of airports like Girona or Reus,” in terms of air operations, explained Isidre Gavín. Gavín explained that BAA Training has based up to 20 aircraft in Alguaire, along with a permanent group of about 35 students and twenty instructors, in addition to administrative and maintenance staff. Recently, the company has installed a new flight simulator, with an investment of 500,000 euros, for pilot training and instruction.
Furthermore, in the realm of aircraft preservation and maintenance, more than a dozen aircraft are engaged in these activities in Alguaire: specialized company SERVITEC currently maintains a Boeing 747, which arrived last Sunday, and five aircraft from Icelandair, while also recycling two more aircraft, a Boeing 747 Jumbo from Wamos Air and an Airbus A330 from Portuguese company TAP. Norwegian also operates a maintenance service for its four aircraft parked on the platform. The industrial development of the airport will continue with the construction of hangars for training and maintenance activities, as well as the expansion of the platform to meet growing demand.
